RAJA AMPAT DIVE RESORT
The Raja Ampat, or “Four Kings,” archipelago encompasses more than 9.8 million acres of land and sea off the northwestern tip of Indonesia’s West Papua Province. Located in the Coral Triangle, the heart of the world’s coral reef biodiversity, the seas around Raja Ampat possibly hold the richest variety of species in the world.
The area’s massive coral colonies show that its reefs are resistant to threats like coral bleaching and disease —threats that now jeopardize the survival of corals around the world. In addition, Raja Ampat’s strong ocean currents sweep coral larvae across the Indian and Pacific Oceans to replenish other reef ecosystems.

BIRD WATCHING
Raja Ampat offers exceptional opportunities for bird watching and WWII wreck hunting. Spectacular bird species in the area include the common sulphur-crested cockatoo, the large flightless cassowary, huge sea eagles, shockingly colourful Eclectus parrots and the incredible red bird of paradise Paradisea rubra, endemic to Waigeo and Batanta.
If wreck diving is your cup of tea, you’ll go nuts over the P-47 D Thunderbolt “Razorback” lying on its back 20 metres off the Wai island reef.

This US Air Force single-engin\e fighter-bomber was one of seven (“Tubby Flight” of 311th Fighter Squadron) which took off from Noemfoor Island on a bombing and strafing mission to Ambon on 21 October 1944, and was subsequently ditched after running out of fuel. The plane is in perfect shape, with only a nicked propeller blade. All dashboard instruments and wing armament remain intact. There are literally hundreds of other well-preserved wrecks — boats, tanks, airplanes — to be seen in the region, but most require special trips.
